Gaming is best when having full utilization of the hardware, so I am no longer really looking at VM solutions for Windows installations. However, I am no longer looking at trying to get newer versions of Windows to work with older hardware/software in compatibility mode as it has caused me loads of problems. And due to the complexity of setting up Linux to the way I want, I have found myself starting over and over after breaking the Linux installation only to find out it can’t be done or I just give up. With the ever changing world of Linux and the mass amount of different distributions (which is more than just the bundle of software that is stated so much), the guides tend to be too old or leave things out. Most of the time they are left out because the guide writer seems to think all Linux users (to include “noobs” like me) should already know. It also didn’t help with the negativity in the communities when asking for help. Anyway, I am looking to tweak the following operating systems for gaming (to include LAN and internet), but limiting all other uses. I hope to try using a light Linux such as PuppyLinux or Pepermint 386 in VM to do the other stuff.

Since I have multiple systems from Win95 up to the latest for gaming, I was looking for a daily driver that can accomplish all of what I was looking for from low power and light weight to powerful graphics or lots of processors and ram. I did not want a daily driver loaded with software that I would never use like Ubuntu. I liked Pop OS with the nVidia driver version as many of my computers have nVidia cards or hybrids. Unfortunately, Pop OS (like Ubuntu) has moved away from 32bit releases along with beefing up their system requirements. Of course this now means that I have to find a very lightweight operating system that is able to “grow” to what I want it. That also means that I have to have the ability to load the dreaded nVidia drivers (ug).

I am looking at Peppermint OS. Peppermint is a cloud-centric based derived from t and lightweight Ubuntu LTS based distribution. It uses a hybrid of LXDE and Xfce which makes it ideal for older computers but still robust enough to be a full-fledged and traditional desktop daily driver. It has the x64 and still the x86 releases. My initial install of Peppermint x64 when trying it out in VirtualBox, it used about 5GB total disk space and less d than 300MB of RAM.
